Rocky Point, Mexico

Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico

Puerto Penasco is a working shrimp town in the northern state of Sonora. Mexico, on the Northeast shores of the Sea Of Cortez.. Because of its close proximity to the southern Arizona border, it has become a favorite getaway destination for folks in Phoenix and Tucson, many of whom purchase beach homes or condos and visit Puerto Penasco (otherwise known as Rocky Point) several times a year. The city is in the US-Mexico "free zone", so there are few if any travel restrictions, no passports required and pretty much everyone in town speaks English and takes dollars.

We discovered Rocky Point more or less through the web last year (1999) and have visited twice now. Long drive from the Denver area (20-22 hours each way), we usually stay a week or so and spend most of our time relaxing at the beach and visiting the excellent seafood restaurants in town. Mexico is a terrific place -- warm and friendly people, nice climate and an absurd abundance of beaches.

This year (2000), we rented a beachfront house in the Playa Mirador subdivision about 18 miles south of town...slept, read and swam a lot. Exquisite decompression. Here are a few shots from that trip.

Shrimp boats heading out for another workday. In the distance is the huge expanse known as Sandy Beach and the Hotel Princesa, practically near completion now. Rocky Point is growing slowly as a destination resort, but the Princesa will be one of its two or three flagship resorts.
