The Colorado River - Pumphouse Run

The Colorado River - Pumphouse

The Colorado River starts its long voyage in the mountains of North Central Colorado, amidst the 13,000 peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. There are many standard runs for the whitewater enthusiast in Colorado and, much further along, through Utah, including Westwater Canyon, Cataract Canyon, Rudy and Horsethief Canyons...and here, a relatively gentle float trip through the Gore Range of Colorado, called Pumphouse. Most of this run, about 20 miles in length, floats through high alpine semi-wilderness, home to waterfowl, beaver, otters and, of course, trout. A popular run for fisherman, it's also a great getaway for float boaters like us - it's only about 2 1/2 hours from Denver. We try to make as many trips out here each summer as we can - not so much for the whitewater (although it's a pretty lively run at high spring runoff), but just to get out, get wet, get away.

A sweeping vista of the river and nearby foothills, taken from only a half mile or so from the put-in, looking upstream toward Gore Canyon, a very difficult and steep Class V kayak run. Pumphouse is Class II-III.
