Mt Harvard

Mt Harvard is the backbone of the Collegiate Range of South Central Colorado. It is the third highest peak in Colorado, towering 14,420' above sea level, and lies within a range of peaks that include several 14'ers, including Colorado's highest peak, Mt Elbert at 14,433'.

The climb up Harvard is quite long, probably 10 or 11 miles from the trailhead parking lot. As was our habit in those days, we drove out one morning and climbed up to the valley beneath the mountain in the afternoon, and summited the next day. Early starters in good shape can do the mountain in a single day, but we never quite fit that description. The weekend we did Harvard, in September 1991, we had extremely good weather - chilly at night, but dry and comfortable during the day.

Karin summited this peak - Dave got a very nasty case of altitude sickness about 300' from the summit and had to quit.
